What I'm Watching Fall 2008 [Oct. 4th, 2008|10:17 am]

[mood | lazy]

Ah the beginning of a new TV season. I love it. I'm a TV addict I admit it. But at least when I watch TV it's because there is something specific I want to watch. That's what I'm telling myself to feel better. At any rate, here's what I'm watching this season. There's not a whole lot different from last year since due to the strike there really wasn't a whole lot new to watch, and if there was it looked like crap.

Sundays:
The Amazing Race
Now in its 11th season, it's still fun. The only reality TV show I ever got into. I enjoy getting to see different parts of the world. And of course there's always at least one team you love to hate.

Dexter
Showtime's show about a kind of lovable serial killer. I don't have much to say about this show, but I enjoy it.

True Blood
HBO's new show produced by Alan Ball about vampires. I heard lots of good things about this show prior to its start, and since I really liked Six Feet Under, Ball's last series, I decided to give it a try. We're about 4 episodes in at this point, and I'm enjoying it so far. Unlike a lot of people who say that the way the vampires are treated is a beat you over the head metaphor for homosexuals, I don't really see it that much. I mean I don't doubt that it is part of Ball's intention, but I don't find it to be too over the top. I got more of that from the X-Men movies than I get from this show.

Mad Men
AMC's first scripted TV show, now in its second season. It's about advertisers on Madison Avenue in the 1960's. It's definitely a period drama and very much a character study. If you're into fast moving, plot driven shows, this is not the one for you. This really started in the summer, and there's only a few episodes left for the season, but I'm looking forward to seeing how things end up.

Mondays
Chuck
My favorite show. If you're not watching this show, you should be. It's smart, it's sexy, it's action-packed, and it's just plain fun. The plot premise is kind of far out there, in that Chuck is a computer geek working in a Buy More (i.e. Best Buy) who winds up with the files from some computer program created jointly by the NSA and CIA downloaded into his head. The actual computer itself was destroyed so the government has to rely on Chuck to access all the secrets that were stored there. Thus he has two "handlers" who keep an eye on him. If you can get past the ridiculous premise, which with this show was actually pretty easy to do at least for me, it's a great show. I insist that you go start watching it now.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Obviously based on the Terminator movies, this show is supposed to take place between T2 and T3. A good action packed show, that I'm enjoying a lot more than I expected to. I don't expect it to be around much longer though unfortunately since I'm sure it costs a ton of money to make and the ratings pretty much suck.

How I Met I Your Mother
Although this is not a new show, its in its fourth season, it's new to me. Paul and I just watched the first 3 seasons on DVD over the summer, and I fell in love with this show. Like Chuck, if you're not watching this show, you really should be. It's really funny. I can't remember the last show that made me laugh out loud almost every episode. HIMYM is shows that sitcoms can still be funny. Go watch it!

Tuesdays
House
Now in it's fifth season I am not enjoying this show nearly as much as I used to. In my opinion it rather jumped the shark last season. They tried to fix something that wasn't broken and managed to break it in the process. They replaced House's original staff with new doctors, none of whom I really like and pretty much relegated the old characters to nothing. Of the 3 of them Foreman is the only one with any sort of role left on the show, and he was my least favorite of the original 3, so that's annoying. As for poor Chase and Cameron, we pretty much never get to see them at all despite the fact that they are still prominently listed in the opening credits (unlike the new characters who aren't yet. What's up with that?). In the last two episodes Chase has been in the show for about a minute total and Cameron not at all. Plus because they didn't already bloat the cast enough, now there's some stupid private investigator character, who I hear they're trying to spin-off into his own show. I wish they would spin him off already because he annoys me and is taking up way too much screen time. I really hope that things improve because I miss this show. It used to be so awesome and I couldn't wait to watch it. Now not so much.

Wednesdays
Pushing Daisies
A vibrant show that totally reminds me of being in a Tim Burton movie to some extent. It's based on a complicated premise where Ned can bring people back to life, but if they are alive for longer than a minute someone else dies, and if he touches them again they will die. He brings his childhood sweetheart back to life after she is murdered and now they along with Emerson Cod, a private investigator, solve weird crimes by bringing the dead back to life temporarily to ask who killed them. It's fun, and definitely unlike anything else on television.

Friday Night Lights
I love this show and am so happy that we have DirectTV so we can watch it now instead of waiting until February when NBC is going to broadcast it. It's the most realistic show on television (last season withstanding). The characters are amazingly real, and there's not much more to say. I just love it. It's like stepping into the lives of the people of Dillon. It's just plain good.

Thursdays
Ugly Betty
Now in it's third season, I don't like this show as much as I used to. It's still good, but sometimes I think it's trying too hard and doesn't really know where to go at this point. Although it's not as good as it was at the beginning, I still find it enjoyable to watch.

My Name is Earl
Also in its third season, I really don't know why I'm watching this show anymore. Habit I guess. I enjoyed the first season, but after that it got really tired. I didn't really care for it much last season at all. All the things that made me laugh the first season were played out by the second season and are really tired now. I doubt I'll keep watching this show much longer.

The Return of Jezebel James [Mar. 16th, 2008|01:56 pm]

[mood | disappointed]

When I heard about this show way back sometime last year I was excited as it is written and produced by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who was the writer and executive producer for Gilmore Girls, one of my all time favorite shows. Plus it was set to star Parker Posey, who I normally like and Lauren Ambrose, who played Claire on Six Feet Under another show I liked.

Then I started reading stuff last fall about how things weren't going so well, and the show wasn't that good a lot of it being due to Parker Posey and her apparent inability to act on television. Then I figured things must be really bad when Fox shortened their order to only 8 episodes and pushed back the premier date despite the writer's strike going on.

Unfortunately none of this was wrong. I watched the first 2 episodes, which were on back to back on Friday night, and this show is a travesty. And mostly it's Parker Posey's fault. If it wasn't for her, it might actually be watchable. I thought Lauren Ambrose was good and I enjoyed the way she played her character. If we could just excise Parker Posey it might actually work. Unfortunately she's one of the main characters so they really can't get rid of her. The show is totally written in Amy Sherman-Palladino style with the characters talking 8000 words a minute. Parker Posey could not pull this off like Lauren Graham and Alexis Bleidel could. I swear she is trying to be Lauren Graham and failing miserably at it. Everything she did and said seemed horribly overacted, and it was grating to watch. It's a real shame because I had such high hopes for this show once upon a time. Now I don't think I can stand to watch it with Parker Posey emoting all over the screen.

Just a few random asides for the other Gilmore Girl's fans. Amy Sherman-Palladino definitely has some favorites as the actress who played Gypsy on Gilmore Girl's played some random pregnant woman in a doctor's office in the first episode. She won't be back, but the guy who played Max Medina on Gilmore Girl's was also on as Parker Posey's current boyfriend so he'll definitely be back at least for awhile. Not that I'll be watching to find out.
